Tidy up songs!

Tidying up can be a chore in both settings and in the home!

We all get a bit annoyed with having to tidy up! Some of us like things where we leave them....it makes it easier to find things later! This is often how a child thinks. If they have got everything out, they have had a thought process within their play and therefore, know where things are within a pile of toys!!

However, we all have to tidy up....for our safety as much as anything (there is nothing more painful then stepping on Lego!) This itself can be a massive task! First you have to convince the child as to why they need to tidy up, and then you have the whole battle of the style in which they do so!

A great way I have found in many settings, as I am sure many of you are aware, is the use of music. The children are given a 5 minute warning (often with a sand timer) and the music is put on and played until the room is cleared. This, of course, with adults helping in order to model to the children.

This works great at home too! Being an ex nursery nurse, I use this technique in my home now and again. I used to use it every time, but after a while my daughter just began to sing it herself, telling me she doesn't need the music!! It definitely has it's benefits and makes tidying up more of a game or dance than a chore!!

Here are a few ideas for tunes you can use:

1. The tidy up tango (Boogie Mites)
2. Clean up song (Barney) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJhXVg2QisM

3. The tidy up Rhumba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhw6JDF4A0Q

4. Tidy Up song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV1sMws_Gqg

5. The Beach Boys - I get around http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWesxME9Cto  (I heard this in a setting and it worked wonders! It doesn't have to be tidy up related!!)

6. Flight of the Bumble bee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QV1RGMLUKE

The best thing to do is choose a song, and stick to it!! It will not work if you keep changing the song, as children need familiarity and will recognise as soon as they hear that tune, it is time to tidy away.

Give it a try!!
