Pumpkin fun!!

We have been enjoying some pumpkin related fun in the Childcare Clair household!!

Yesterday, my daughter was most excited that she had made a "pumpkin" at Preschool. With all the excitement of Halloween upon us, she has been discussing ghosts, pumpkins and witches all week! The idea the  Preschool had was a simple one, but helped the children to develop some new skills. All you need is a satsuma and some celery, Get the child to peel their satsuma/clementine and then carefully cut a piece of celery to stick in the top. These make a fantastic healthy snack for your child and also for parties too!!

Not to be outdone by the great ideas from the Preschool, I have been cooking up a new playdough recipe for the Halloween season! Pumpkin playdough!! I thought it would be a fantastic idea and began researching if and how other people had accomplished it.

I found that many people in America had created playdough recipes for Pumpkin Playdough, using Pumpkin Pie spice. This is something we cannot really source in the UK, so I looked into what is actually in pumpkin pie spice! It is a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice, so I raided my cupboards and was able to find two of those ingredients to experiment with.

The recipe I used (for a small amount of dough) is :

1 and1/2 cup flour
1 cup salt
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 Tbsp oil
1 cup water
1 tsp Nutmeg
1 tsp Cinnamon
Orange food colour gel

All dry ingredients go into a saucepan. Add the liquid and then put on low heat, stirring until it sticks together. Allow to cool and take out of saucepan for kneading. Add some more flour if still a little sticky. Knead in the orange gel colour.

The great thing about this dough is the scent. My daughter sat for ages exploring the dough, creating pumpkins and witches with her cutters etc. She has even made "pumpkin cakes" for me to share with her!! It is definitely one to try for Halloween!!
