Never underestimate your little one!!

Sometimes we can underestimate just how much our children can do!
Over the summer break, my daughter has changed somewhat. Gone is the toddler wanting Mummy to do everything to help her out, and in her place is a more confident little three year old insistent on trying things for herself. It can be a very scary time as a parent, letting them take new risks and explore, but most of all it can leave some feeling rather emotional too!

I am feeling quite proud that my daughter has some new found confidence. I am also missing my little girl as she is now spending more time at Preschool in the week then with me at home. It feels liberating to have some more time to myself, but on the other side I must admit to having pangs of anxiety that I am missing out on something wonderful as she enters her fourth year.

The praise is rife at the moment. I have been constantly smiling as she shows me the new things she can do. "Look Mummy, I can climb the stairs like a big girl" I was told the other morning. My heart leapt into my mouth as she walked up with one hand on the rail rather than on her fours. Then, the same afternoon I get called into the front room to see her picture "Mummy, I drawed an "M"!" And lo and behold, there was a perfect tiny m on her paper!!

Although it is sometimes tough to let your child grow up, it is something we all have to contend with. They cannot stay small forever, and no matter how old they get, they still need you! The trick is to be there to share their triumphs, encourage their imagination and concentration, boost their self esteem and help them to be what they want to be.
