Day 11 and 12 5pm and close up #31daysinjuly

Combining two days worth..........our 5pm close up!! And dinners feature greatly in the news today!

Our dishwasher.........pretty full come 5pm and my daughter has finished her dinner!! It is a big day for school dinners today as it is suggested that packed lunches should be banned in schools to ensure children are getting a healthy meal a day.

A plan, which has been drawn up by John Vincent and Henry Dimbleby, describes how parents are spending 1 billion pounds in this country on packed lunches and yet only 1 per cent of them reach a child's nutritional requirements. The plan suggests that head teachers should ban unhealthy lunches being brought into school or to ban them altogether, meaning children would be required to have a school meal instead. These are the school meals that only a few years ago were being criticised by Jamie Oliver for being unhealthy themselves!

Things which do make some sense are suggestions that teachers eat with the children at meal times (this used to happen in my old secondary school, there was a teachers table!) and that cooking should be part of the curriculum until a child is 14 years old.

These ideas are another attempt at tackling childhood obesity. I am a bit on the fence with this one as I was planning to send my daughter with a packed lunch when she goes to school in 2014, meaning that we would still get to eat a cooked meal together in the evening, which is a lovely part of our day. I would like to think that my packed lunches would be quite healthy, although there are some things my daughter does not like. The problem is with packed lunches, there are so many things parents are asked NOT to include in lunchboxes due to allergies etc, it must be quite hard for parents to get a lunch box right!!

What are your thoughts?
