Celebrating World Book Day

We have been celebrating WBD with a recipe!!

As I knew World Book Day was approaching this week, I had been thinking of how to celebrate. My daughter is a big fan of books and always has been. I am sure it has come from reading to her every night since she was a baby (and even before that in the womb!!) I was not sure which book to organise an activity around, but then I thought the person who should choose should be her!!

And so, I asked her to find me the best book she had in her downstairs book box (of which she has 2 downstairs and then one separate collection upstairs!) She came back with her Cookie Monster book "Me love Cookies" Well, there was only one thing we could do with this book!!

After reading the story through twice together, we looked at all the pictures in the book and discussed the different foods in the story. From carrots to tomatoes and various fruit, there were many to choose from. It was however, the oranges which my daughter pointed out most excitedly " Mummy got those in kitchen!"

I did indeed........ as well as the ingredients to create some cookies of our own. So, I got to searching into finding a recipe for Orange chocolate chip cookies. This involved my daughter too, sat on my lap as we carefully typed in the words into the search engine. (We had looked in my recipe books, as it is world book day after all, but no recipes had what we were looking for!!
After printing off the recipe, we got our aprons on and washed our hands to create the cookies. It was fun getting the ingredients out and discussing each one, measuring the ingredients out and mixing them together! After spilling the sugar across the floor and having to start again (great hilarity from my daughter!) we were soon placing our little balls of dough into the oven!!

It just goes to show that a lot of learning can come from one book. In the story itself, Cookie Monster shares a batch of cookies with his friend, Elmo. We discussed which friends she would like to share her cookies with, so sticking to the moral of the story! It was a great mornings activity!!

Here is the recipe for you to try:

  • 125g butter

  • 150g caster sugar

  • 1 orange, zest grated

  • 1 egg

  • 190g plain flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 85g chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas 2. Grease some baking trays.
