Taking children to a wedding

Taking a little one to a wedding can be a bit stressful...........but has its rewards too!!

At the weekend, we went to the wedding of a friend of my husbands in Kent. We had been looking forward to getting away from it all for a day or so and enjoy staying in a lovely hotel. After a stressful morning trying to get the venue, we arrived ready to go and with time to spare. All the time we were waiting for the ceremony to begin, I was worrying about how a 20 month old child would actually mix in the surroundings.........I wasn't sure sitting for a ceremony after sitting in the car for 2 hours was going to go down to well!!

I managed to quell the situation a little by telling her we were going to see a pretty lady wearing a pretty dress. This worked until the bride had made her way down the aisle, then the whole "oooo pretty" wore off and she became a little restless. We ended up giving her my husbands phone to look at, and even then she was quite vocal!! All I could imagine is the wedding video being played back with my daughters voice over the vows!! My husband couldn't understand why I was so uncomfortable, but there is nothing worse then knowing that everyone turns to look at you when your child is making a noise at a quiet and romantic moments!!

I was able to relax at the wedding breakfast. Our little one was chilled out and glad for some food and had the distraction of a gift from the bride and groom of a cuddly toy and the novelty champagne bubbles left on the table. Then, off to the disco and that is where I really saw my daughter shine!! She was totally enthralled by the lights and music. She was so amazed at what she saw, her little face seemed to light up!! Then, she began to dance and even to the point that she didn't want her Mummy or Daddy to join her..............she is definitely becoming very independent!!!

So, here are my tips for taking a child to a wedding:

1. Be prepared with toys to distract them (preferably ones that don't make a noise!)

2. If your child is unsettled, take them out of the room

3. Make sure your child has a chance to walk around and let off some energy before sitting down

4. Try not to be too worried.........the bride and groom would appreciate there will be some noise as they invited children in the first place!

5. Relax and have fun...........your child will pick up on your stress and that could lead to them being unsettled!
