Happy Pancake Day!!

We all eat the yummy pancakes, but why do we have pancakes today in the first place?
The taste of a delicious pancake on Shrove Tuesday.........yummy!! But, the reason why we have these yummy treats is something many people do not often know. Shrove Tuesday falls on the day before Lent, Ash Wednesday. The reason for the pancakes? Well, when people fast for lent, they enjoy the things traditionally given up inside of them............flour, sugar, fat and eggs.

And with these delicious ingredients, we make a lovely pancake. Fillings vary from fruit to jam, ice cream, syrup.....the list goes on. Many people have fun tossing the pancakes in their frying pan, pancake races ensue and children enjoy hearing pancake stories.

For us, we read Pancake, Pancake by Eric Carle and Curious George makes pancakes, after eating some pancakes with Jam. They went down quite well with my daughter and her friend. I intend to allow her to understand the real history behind Pancake Day when she is old enough to understand the concept.

So come on, how did you celebrate the day? What toppings do you prefer?? Any activity ideas surrounding the day??? Email me at childcareclair@hotmail.co.uk
